MBC-UMRA Ride 5/7/2024 Milwaukee Trail east & Beyond

Post event report:

3 riders met at Silver Park to enjoy this windy and cool afternoon. Planning for the west wind of 10 to 20 mph at around 48 degrees we took advantage of the wind by beginning eastbound on the Milwaukee Trail. Using what wind shelter we could find after leaving the Milwaukee Trail at 4th St. and Gerald St. we continued in the residential streets as we made our way south and eventually to the South Hills trail system to proceed west to Miller Creek Rd. with a full headwind most of the way. After crossing Hwy 93 at Miller Creek Rd. we proceeded to the Fort Missoula Regional Park battling the alternating cross wind and headwind. From the Fort our travel was predominately north or east for the rest of ride and fortunately the wind continued as forecast out of the west. We all appreciated the tailwind for the last distance to Silver Park.

  • Distance - 14.5 miles
  • Elev. Gain - 13ft
  • Time - hour 28 min
  • Average speed - 10.8 mi/hr
  • As ridden adjustments to the proposed route have been added to the map in a second layer. No one used the alternate routes indicated initially.

Pre-ride information:

Welcome to another Spring MBC-UMRA Ride

Given the current long range weather forecast for, Tuesday, 5/7, with a high of 49 and 24% likelihood of precipitation, with winds at 10 - 20 MPH, this should be a reasonable day, though windy day to continue our 2024 riding season for the Tuesday MBC-UMRA riding group. This will be an afternoon ride beginning at 1:30 PM in Silver Park. A preliminary plan for our route for this ride would begin with a ride east on the Milwaukee Trail to the Madison under-bridge, then taking 5th St. to left on Arthur to right on University St. Then cross Higgins to Plymouth to Park St. then right on Pattee Creek Dr. This route is on paved multi-use trails, some bike lane on street riding, two single track dirt trails that can be avoided by any riders who prefer to not ride the dirt single tracks, and one in traffic crossing of Hwy 93 from Miller Creek Rd. to the Bitterroot Trail. See the map below for the complete proposed route of approximately 13.7 miles including the suggested alternate routes to avoid the dirt single tracks.

If you have any suggestions for future rides for this primarily Tuesday biking group, please let me know by entering it on the "Propose a Ride" page and indicate that you would like someone else to lead. Also, if you would be interested in leading or co-leading any of the future MBC-UMRA Tuesday rides, you can submit your interest on our "Propose a Ride" page.

Any cancellation/postponement of this ride will be posted here and a cancellation email will be sent out not later than 11:00 AM on Tuesday 5/7, to all who have RSVP'd. Always dress appropriately for your comfort.

While this ride is targeted towards UM Retirees, it is open to all MBC members. Please remember that this will be a slow to moderate pace with the potential of only one moderate hill, the Reserve St overpass. Please RSVP if you’re considering joining the ride so that you will be provided the leader's contact information and can be informed of any late-breaking changes (e.g., weather or smoke related cancellation).
